“Poetry is the journal of the sea animal living on land, wanting to fly in the air. Poetry is a search for syllables to shoot at the barriers of the unknown and the unknowable. Poetry is a phantom script telling how rainbows are made and why they go away.”

— Carl Sandburg, from The Atlantic, March 1923.

Think Of Me, For I Will Think Of You

Think of me when that day shall come,
When our paths must slowly part,
Think of me and remember the sun,
That so bravely for us fought;
On that day when distances grow,
If you ever have the time,
Think of me, for I will think of you,
And never forget our life;
When seasons change and leaves turn green,
Never think about what was lost,
But instead recall all the beautiful things,
That found our hearts on loves fond course;
Think of me, for I will think of you,
When I awake in silent tear,
Envision your heart and find me there,
For that is where I shall live;
Think of me if you will,
At times when times seem hard,
And I will think of you my dear,
Forever growing closer to my beating heart;
Please say you'll think of me,
In whatever else you choose to do,
For daylight shall never find me free-
From the thought of loving you;
And as flowers fade to bloom no more,
It is not a tragic deed,
For clearer now than year's ago-
Are the things that I see;
For as I look into your angelic eyes,
I see the love that binds your heart to mine,
And from now until the seasons end,
I will love you more than I could have ever loved you then.

From My Heart, I Thank You

I Thank You for all the moments we’ve shared,
All the tender kisses and each warm embrace,
Every teardrop you freely cried,
Whenever my heart became enraged;
I Thank You for every precious moment,
That we spend in love’s embrace,
The understanding, respect, and loyalty,
You’ve shown each and every day;
I Thank You for always being there,
When I needed you by my side,
All the encouragement and support you’ve given,
And every personal sacrifice;
I Thank You for all the beauty,
That consumes my loving heart,
And all the wonderful memories,
That shall never from us part;
I Thank You for all the tenderness and love,
You joyfully give to me each day,
The soothing voice to calm my fears,
And the wisdom you share to guide my way;
I Thank You for all these things and more,
For you are very special to me,
And I love you more, for who you are-
Than all the things you could ever be.

Though I Passed Before You

There before you, snow all around,
Slipping in from places far-
No greater sorrow can be found,
If viewed from a thousand broken hearts;
There will always remain a void unfilled,
When a loved one passes from our sight,
But they will always walk beside us,
In the heat of the day, or the cool of the night;
You see, I’ll never truly leave you,
For I am never really gone,
As long as you remember the special gifts,
And all the love that you’ve shown;
The beautiful laughter and warming smiles,
The compassion you gave to every little child,
The wisdom you’ve found deep within,
And the love you shared for every dear friend;
The help you gave me each step of the way,
As I journeyed across the tender miles,
All the nights that I gingerly prayed,
That you would find the joy buried deep inside;
For right now I am watching,
From a place far above,
Laughing, singing, and sharing a smile;
Walking around with my head held high,
And my wings outstretched-
To embrace the wayward child;
We will meet again one day,
‘Twill be a glorious day full of love,
We’ll laugh together, and smile together,
And everything will be as it once was.

A Father For All Seasons

There are days when Father’s are rewarded,
For the sternness they have shown,
And there are days when Mother’s are praised,
For all the works they’ve done;
Several holidays have been created to recognize leaders,
For the accomplishments they’ve made,
And even a time when the weather is predicted-
Called Groundhog’s day;
But out of all the days that our calendars honor,
There’s not one to be found for someone like you,
A day that recognizes your strength and courage,
A moment in time when you’re recognized just for being you;
A day that says you’re loved, And respected in all ways,
From the early morning hours, To the close of the day;
A moment when the flowers bloom because of you,
And not because an Almanac says they are supposed to;
A day when you are cherished more than words can say,
To let you know that your heart is not lost along the way;
No, there’s not a day that says all the things that are needed,
To fill your heart with the love you deserve,
No, there’s not a day that shows how much you’re appreciated,
For all the love you give in return;
But the reason this day does not exist,
On the calendars which hang on the wall,
Is because it’s every day you’re loved,
Not just one, but them all.

A Father’s Day Tribute

As I arise each day to view heaven’s dawn,
I thank the angels and God up above,
For giving me sight to see all things,
Like the beauty captured ‘neath a butterfly’s wings;
The green grass growing all around,
And treetops glistening from the morning dew,
Little kittens playing all about,
And robins dancing with love so true;
Little birds foraging to feed their young,
Seagulls wallowing in a rivers tears,
Rabbits playing in pastures green,
And wild horses run ‘cross barren fields;
The snow that falls in winter’s time,
The rainbows that follow a rain drenched day,
The leaves that change their colors to serve,
As a reminder of all the beautiful things;
The winds that play and tease the mind,
And the flowers that bloom along the way,
All the nights we dream upon,
And the wonderful days we celebrate;
I thank the angels and God up above,
For giving me sight to see all things,
Like the love that is held in a person’s heart,
And the love that a Father gives each day;
For everything that is ever done,
No matter how good or how bad,
A Father’s love just grows and grows,
For ‘tis a love that has no end;
And so, Dear Father, my truth and strength,
My personal guide through trying times,
My faithful hero, my dearest friend,
The confidant who always dries my eyes-
I say to you, on this special day,
That I cherish all you’ve given to me,
For there’s not a Father in all the world,
Who could ever come close to what you mean to me.

To The Greatest Father In All the World

Across the barren sands of time,
There marches a man of age and youth,
A man with wisdom and great reprise,
Full of integrity, zeal, and proof-
That all those countless hours of work,
And all the days you labored to provide,
All those little things to prove my worth,
And all the answers to a wondering child-
Never fell upon deaf ears,
Or failed to rest in blinded eyes,
All those lessons that you taught so well-
I retain them all deep inside;
For you have been my strength throughout,
The trials I face each day,
And you have been that sun drenched cloud,
That guided me across my troubled way;
Your hands were cold as fire,
Whenever I ventured from the truth,
But your heart was warm and caring,
Whenever my talents came shining through;
Across the barren sands of time,
There marches a man of age and youth,
The greatest Father e’er given to a child,
Who learned so much because of you;
And so, Dear Father - my guiding light,
My protector against those solemn days,
It was for you this day emerged,
‘Tis because of you this day remains-
The most jubilant moment in all creation,
More magical than the night in which it slumbers,
And for me to honor you on this very day,
Is my way of saying I love you for always being there -
Through all my hopes and all my wonders.

To Mother, With Love

As I sit upon sun drenched sands,
Peering across the calm blue sea,
Pictures of teardrops and glowing smiles-
Come rushing into my memories;
Like tidal waves of emotional cries,
Filled with jubilance and lovelorn hopes,
Bedtime stories and peaceful lullabies,
That soothed my souls most inner thoughts;
Misunderstandings and times of despair,
Followed by inspirational and loving talks,
Missed evening dinners with those who cared,
But supported by comforting afternoon walks;
I never really knew what you tried to teach,
To this young child so full of dreams,
All those stories with morals you prayed-
One day would be understood by me;
I thank you, Dear Mother, for your patience and time,
Your concern, your love, and your friendship true,
The compassion you showed each and every time,
This young child came home to you.

Into The Eyes Of Love

As I escape into alluring eyes,
All tinted by the heaven’s light of day,
I feel my heart become engulfed,
By the beauty of Heaven’s majesty;
For within those eyes I truly find,
All the things I’ve longed to see,
My life, our love and happiness,
But most of all my destiny;
To find a heart so soft and gentle,
A heart that is so honest and kind,
Is nothing more than a dream for some,
But to me it’s the very essence of life;
For I never thought I would find such a heart,
Until that fateful moment in time,
When all the world slowed to a crawl,
As I escaped into your eyes;
Those eyes of virtue, integrity, and truth,
That capture every moment under blissful skies,
Those eyes of warmth, compassion, and love,
That make my heart so joyfully cry;
And as I escape into those eyes once more,
Where angels dance upon starcast eve’s,
I thank the heaven’s for you, my joy-
And for all of loves anniversaries.

I Know I Will Never Love But You

As I gaze into the eyes of heaven's angelic face,
I feel my heart long for life,
For I have found within the eyes of peace-
Flourishing days and gentler nights;
A soul-stirring warmth which soothes my darkest fears,
Eases my mind from trials yet to come,
It lulls my spirit across siren shores,
And enriches my life with dreams unborn;
From amidst the gentle aging sands,
A sweet voice calls to my endearing heart,
In such a tender way that bids I listen,
While bringing my heart to love once more;
And as I look into the eyes,
Where vibrant stars would dance,
I'm impelled to capture the midnight sky,
And place the heavens in loving hands;
In my mind I've faintly tasted,
Those lips so tender to the touch,
And thus my heart, Cupid's bow found - slain,
And my love from thence hath grown so much;
And now, if I could touch the moon's bright face,
I'd pull it close and whisper in its ear,
That I have found my heaven on earth,
And she stands beside me every day of the year;
For when I look into her eyes,
I see the ocean's deepest hue,
And as I kiss your moistened brow,
I know I will never love but you.

All Of This I’d Do For You

If God gave me the power,
To change all the things I found misplaced,
I’d use that power to change the world-
Into The Garden of Eden from days erased;
I’d steal the moon from its home,
And place it by your side,
I’d enslave a star - ‘twould be yours alone,
As your guiding light;
I’d move the seaboard closer in,
And force its waters warm,
I’d embrace the breath of the wind,
And release it gently upon your arm;
I’d swallow up the aging sands,
And give the earth another moon,
I’d place a rose in your hand,
And bid an angel as your groom;
I’d flood The Gardens with roses grand,
And trees that kiss the skyline’s cheek,
I’d make myself into Adams lad,
And fill your heart with tresses deep;
All of this I’ll do for you,
And no one else upon reprieve,
For no one else can fill my heart with joy,
Or a love that’s greater than the love of my Eve.

Though The Words Escape Me

There are often times I can’t explain,
These feelings buried so deep inside,
That immerse themselves within my thoughts,
Whenever I hold you by my side;
But today I feel I’ve found the words,
Which have escaped me for so long,
The words that say how much I love you,
And want to hold you in my arms;
For I remember in time an unspoken word,
When I kissed your tender lips,
The wind stopped blowing, the world stopped moving,
But within my heart - grew no silence;
For in that moment your heart spoke to mine,
So soft and gentle, so calm and low,
I felt a joy I bid not pass me by,
For I’d never felt that joy before;
I felt a strength of love that day,
That could never be replaced by times resent,
For freedom rested within my thoughts,
And my heart rested upon your lips;
And as I share my life with you,
Greater does my love remain-
Than the moment when I first kissed you,
And better than it could have ever been;
For all the love you’ve given to me,
I bid it never pass me by,
And so I thank you this day,
For being such a special part of my life.

A Birthday Celebration

There occurs a moment in everyone's life,
When long hello's and short good-byes,
Remind us of peaceful days and gentler nights,
And blissful eves of dawning's light;
When life was but a fleeting passion-
Filled with hopes, dreams, and aspiration of love,
And yet all throughout the Heaven's-
God found time for us;
He gave us stars to wish upon,
The sun and moon to shed light on our paths,
He gave us the rains to wash away our fears,
And the winds to do the same;
He gave us times to celebrate,
The things we hold most dear,
The things we hold to our convictions,
And dreams of sultry yesteryear;
Days of revelation and contentment,
Nights of wonders and beauty great,
Gardens of roses to nurture then share,
And wonderful birthdays to celebrate;
And so for you on such a glorious day,
I wish you all the Heavens' longings,
All the beauty to cultivate-
The smile you're always dawning;
That soothing voice of reason,
That echoes throughout the land,
That makes the Heavens weep,
For the friendships that are so grand;
May all of your days continue on-
As monuments of compassion, friendship, and love,
And may your birthday be as beautiful,
As the glorious Heavens above.

A Wedding Day Prayer

As these two hearts are bound in love,
In the presence of family and friends,
May all of the joys this marriage finds,
Be renewed over and over again;
May these two hearts find miracles each day,
That guide them through their daily lives,
With kindled hearts and warm embrace,
Loving arms and trusting eyes;
May compassion fill these vessels great,
With the love of a thousand endearing minds,
While romance pours forth from their lips,
As they rest in each others arms at night;
May the respect of which they have-
For each others success in life,
Spring forth and bare yet another fruit,
To fulfill their ever growing light;
May the words which are so softly whispered,
While embraced in loving arms,
Be reminders of how much they truly love-
The fond desire between growing hearts;
May their hands never stray or eyes lose sight,
Of the precious gifts they possess,
Each others trust, each others hand,
Each others love, health, and strength;
Lord grant this union of virtue true,
An everlasting love eternally blessed,
By Thy ever caring hands,
Thy unswerving love,
Thy loyalty,
Thy compassion,
And Thy glorious gifts from above.

Wedding Vows

Do you take this lady of virtue true,
To be yours alone until death do you part?
To love and to hold from this day forth,
As the most precious piece of your endearing heart?
Do you promise to cherish, love, and provide,
Even when times seem too tough?
Do you promise to honor her, and respect her,
And never misplace her love?
Do you take this lady of virtue true,
To be your light when days are dark?
Do you promise your loyalty above all else,
When time weighs heavy on your heart?
Do you vow to defend her honor,
Against the toughest foes of today?
And if that foe is gift wrapped as a friend,
Then what will you say?
Do you take this lady of virtue true,
To be your confidant in trying times?
Will you promise to keep her safe,
And out of harms way while by your side?
What say you to these questions of love,
That will forever bind your heart to hers,
And manifest between the both of you,
A fortress of love vibrant and true?
What say you to these words,
As you take the hand of this lady true?
"I say I love her more than all the earth,
And I simply say I do.
